Accommodation (Ladakh)
Ladakh is not cheap by any means. Accommodation in Ladakh is fairly costly. Most houses and hotels depend on solar energy, specially, in remote areas. You will need to make advance bookings if you want comfortable and affordable options. Leh city has the largest number of homestays and hotels. Hence, it is the most affordable of all in terms of stay options. Korzok is the costliest due to remoteness and lack of infrastructure. As a result, all the stay options are not even listed online. So, if you find an affordable one, go for it. Alternatively, you can also ask your taxi operator to get one booked.
If you chose to do day tours, you will be required to book your stay only in Leh which will substantially cut your cost. In Leh, you will find plenty of restaurants and food stalls. But elsewhere it is very difficult to find anything except Maggi or eggs. Try to book all your accommodations with breakfast and dinner at least. We will provide details of our accommodations in Ladakh in suggestions.
Leh
Leh has a lot of stay options. This is the easiest place to find accommodation in Ladakh. Some areas in particular are flooded with hotels. There are hostels, hotels, cottages and homestays. If you are travelling solo or with small group and all are young, you may choose hostels. If you are travelling with family stick to hotels. Homestays can be costly. If you plan to stay longer choose hostels or ask around the locals for renting a room. The average cost of hostels will be around ₹700 – 900 per person per day. Hotels would cost ₹2000 – 2500 per day. Rooms will be cozy with all basic amenities. If you want better rooms with all facilities you will have to shell out more money.
Nubra Valley
In Nubra, you have accommodations in two areas – Diskit and Hunder. Hunder is costlier than Diskit but it allows you to stay close to the sand dunes. Diskit is about 7km from Hunder. Decide on basis of how you would like to spend the day. You may get decent hotels in Diskit for about ₹2500 per day. The nights get chilly so choose a hotel that have heaters or offers hot water bags. Most hotels run on solar energy here for most of the time. It is difficult to get running hot water or room heaters unless you are in some of the costlier hotels. Markets close quite early. Nights are eerily silent. You can ask your hotel to arrange a bonfire. The clear skies at night might just give you some peace that you are looking for.
Pangong
There are different stay options in and around Pangong lake. During Summers there are many cottages lining the lake side. They are very popular among tourists. Some offer rooms with shared bathrooms at an average cost of ₹300-400 per person per night. Others have private bathrooms for every room costing anywhere from ₹3500-4000 per room per night. Lakeside cottages are shut in winters. Remember that it gets very cold by the lake even in summers. You can also find stay options in nearby villages of Spangmik, Man, and Merak. They will be comparatively cheaper. Spangmik is the nearest to the lake, then comes Man and last comes Merak.
Tso Moriri
The village in which Tso Moriri lake is located is Karzok. There are some decent stay options here but all are costly. This place was the most difficult to find accommodation in Ladakh. Only a handful are listed online. Again, you may ask your driver to arrange for your stay. We would suggest to refrain from last minute booking as it might cost you more. Here, the average cost of rooms is ₹2500 – 4000 for a decent enough room. You will not find heaters or geysers in the homestays. They will provide you with bucket of hot water when you ask. Other than your booked meals, you will get Maggi and tea.
