Alleppey
The route from Thekkady to Alleppey is both hilly and plain. There were too many scenic views on the way. We could find many tea gardens in this area as well. Alleppey is one of the coastal cities in Kerala. There was a stretch of the road where our driver detoured through rubber plantations. A narrow road winding through the rubber trees on both sides made for a spectacular experience. We saw vast stretches of rubber trees for the first time in our lives. The tall tree trunks were slit and a bucket was attached to collect the latex from the trees. The tree coverings were so dense that it almost became dark in daylight. The overall experience was fun.
Backwaters
The one thing that Alleppey is popular for is the backwaters of the Vembanad lake. These beautiful backwaters attract lakhs of tourists each year. There are many ways in which you can explore the backwaters. Firstly, you may stay in a houseboat, secondly you may take boat ride to the backwaters and thirdly, you may stay in a resort and take a shikara ride to explore.
Houseboats
Staying in a houseboat is one of the most cherished experiences in Kerala. Unsurprisingly, everyone who plans to visit Alleppey has a desire to stay in houseboats. There are different types of houseboats ranging from deluxe, premium or private. You may either book a room in the boat or an entire boat for yourself. The weather in Kerala is balmy even in winter months. It can get quite humid and unbearable on the boat without an AC. For that reason, we suggest to book a premium boat if you want to enjoy your houseboat stay. The boats set sail by 1 PM, therefore, you must check in by 12:30 PM. After that, you will have to take a small boat to reach up to the houseboat. You will be served 3 meals for your entire stay and tea time snacks as well.
The boat only takes you to the middle of the lake. If you want to explore the backwaters you need to hire a smaller boat. You may then explore the canals and river channels to explore the villages and markets. The houseboat comes back to the departure point to dock for the night and again sets to sail for an hour in the morning before your check out. All things considered, it was not as exciting as we had hoped. For a detailed information on the houseboats please check our suggestions post.
Alleppey Beach
If you are not staying in the houseboat or if you have more than a day to stay in Alleppey, you may visit Alleppey beach. Alleppey beach has a beautiful surrounding where you can spend your evenings delightfully. There is a lighthouse as well. You may either chose to stay near the beach or visit in the evening to have a bit of fun.
