Mauritius
Nestled in the heart of the Indian Ocean off the south east coast of Africa, Mauritius is a small tropical island that enchants visitors with its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. This island nation, known for its crystal-clear waters, lush greenery, and pristine beaches, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and rich history that makes it a must-visit destination for travellers seeking both relaxation and adventure. Roughly 64km North to South and 45km East to West, this island may be small but packed with plenty of sightseeing opportunities that will last a lifetime.

History
Mauritius was colonized way back in 1598 by the Dutch. Followed by the French who colonized it 5 years after the Dutch abandoned it in 1710. Later the British won over the French and made Mauritius their colony until its freedom in 1968. The history of Mauritius is a story of immigration, slavery, human exploitation, perseverance and ultimately, triumph. The name Mauritius was given by the Dutch. Although it received independence from the British, the predominance of French influence is too evident in every aspect of Mauritius, be it the language, the cuisine, the culture or architecture.
A Natural Wonderland
Mauritius was formed out of a volcanic activity some nine million years ago. Naturally, it has some breath-taking scenery. The island boasts a diverse range of landscapes, from the iconic white sandy beaches and turquoise lagoons to the rugged mountains and lush forests. The beaches of Mauritius, such as those at Flic en Flac, Belle Mare, and Grand Baie, are some of the finest in the world, providing the perfect setting for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports.

Inland, the Black River Gorges National Park is a haven for nature enthusiasts. This expansive park is home to rare plant species, endemic birds, and picturesque waterfalls. Hiking trails through the park offer stunning vistas and the chance to encounter the island’s unique flora and fauna. The Seven Colored Earths of Chamarel, a geological formation featuring vibrant, multi-coloured sand dunes, is another must-see natural wonder.
Rich Cultural Tapestry
Mauritius is a melting pot of cultures, with influences from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. This cultural diversity is reflected in the island’s architecture, festivals, and cuisine. The capital city, Port Louis, is a bustling hub where colonial buildings stand alongside modern skyscrapers, and markets brim with spices, fresh produce, and handmade crafts.

67% of the population of Mauritius is of Indian descent. Hindi language forms a part of the school curriculum. Surprisingly, even Bhojpuri is widely spoken and understood there. You will find many Hindu temples mostly the Tamil style dotted all over the island.
A Culinary Delight
Mauritian cuisine is a delightful fusion of flavours, reflecting the island’s multicultural influences. Visitors can savour an array of dishes that blend Indian, Chinese, French, and Creole culinary traditions. Popular local dishes include dholl puri (a type of flatbread filled with split peas and served with curry), biryani, and rougaille (a Creole-style tomato-based sauce typically served with fish or chicken).

Seafood lovers will be in paradise, as the island offers a bounty of fresh fish, prawns, and lobsters. Street food is also a highlight, with vendors offering delicious snacks such as samosas, gateaux piments (chili cakes), and boulettes (dumplings). Don’t forget to try the refreshing local beverage, Alouda, a sweet milk-based drink flavored with vanilla or rose syrup.
Adventure and Relaxation
Whether you’re seeking adrenaline-pumping activities or serene relaxation, Mauritius has something for everyone. The island’s clear waters and vibrant coral reefs make it a prime destination for snorkelling and scuba diving. Popular dive sites include Blue Bay Marine Park and the Cathedral, where divers can explore underwater caves and encounter a variety of marine life.
For those who prefer to stay above water, there are plenty of opportunities for sailing, kayaking, and deep-sea fishing. On land, visitors can enjoy activities such as zip-lining, quad biking, and golfing on world-class courses. There is no dearth of trekking options as well. The difficulty ranges from moderate to difficult for different hikes. Le Morne, Black River Gorges, Le Pimont are some of the popular hikes.
If relaxation is your goal, Mauritius offers a wealth of luxurious resorts and spas where you can unwind and rejuvenate. Many resorts feature private beaches, infinity pools, and wellness centres offering a range of treatments and therapies.
Warm Hospitality
Mauritians are known for their friendliness and hospitality. The local Creole phrase “pensez à l’île Maurice” (think of Mauritius) captures the essence of the island’s welcoming spirit. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be greeted with warm smiles and open arms, making you feel right at home. We felt so much at home because of the people we met on our trip. We never felt like being in an unknown country.
Mauritius is a destination that captivates the senses and nourishes the soul.
