Places of Interest (Mauritius)
The population of Mauritius is under 1.3 million. This makes it excellent for tourists to enjoy the calm and serene beauty of this tropical wonder. The plethora of activities and sightseeing places require at least a week to enjoy. There are plenty of ways to go about covering the island. But, for the convenience of covering all the places of interest and not missing anything worthwhile it is better to start from the airport and go around the island in the clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. We chose to go clockwise- starting and ending at the airport. In this post we have covered all the places of interest that we covered in our trip to Mauritius.
For convenience of tourists, Mauritius may be divided into 5 zones namely- North, East, South, West and Central. The different parts of Mauritius have a different charm to them. While the South is still unexplored and dotted with natural dramatic locations, the North is chaotic and buzzing with tourists. The beautiful coastline of the West attract you to forget all worries and enjoy life. The east has a lot of historically important places along with many laid back villages. Central region is the heart of Mauritius with big cities and large population. The nearby islands and islets add to the natural charisma of Mauritius adding to the activities as a tourist.

Although a small island, Mauritius has a variety of sightseeing options. Its places of interest include natural landscapes, rainforests, waterfalls, parks and gardens, zoo, architecture, beaches, hills, adventure parks and a lot of history. The island is very kids friendly. Kids have a lot of activities to enjoy and places they would love to visit.

We had planned all our activities based on the map above which we got from Mauritius Explored. We referred to this map for booking our stays and ticking off the places of interest in Mauritius one by one. The map has all the major and minor stops worth visiting here. Although we could not cover all of them (I wonder if any Mauritian has?), we could tic off most of them. Hereunder, we have explained in detail each place of interest under the different regions as marked in the above map.
South Mauritius
The south of Mauritius, is referred to as the “wild south.” It offers a stark contrast to the more developed northern and western regions of the island. Known for its rugged coastline and unspoiled natural beauty, the south provides a more serene and authentic experience for travellers. The southern coastline of Mauritius is famous for…
West Mauritius
West Mauritius is a mixture of the touristy North and the wild South. In our opinion it was the best area to stay in Mauritius. It has fun beaches, historical and cultural monuments, epic restaurants, and plenty of shopping options. Here we are dividing the tourist spots in two parts: South west and West, as…
North Mauritius
The north of Mauritius island is the most touristy area and hence the most expensive. The climactic conditions of this part make it an excellent location all through the year. It is protected from all extreme weather activities prevalent in the East or the South West. The beaches here are a mix of sandy and…
Central Mauritius
The central part of Mauritius is the most populated area with major cities and excellent connectivity to the rest of island. It has a lot of historical, cultural and modern sites to explore. Topographically the central part is the highest part of Mauritius so you will find the cities surrounded by peaks and lush forests….
East Mauritius
East Mauritius is less popular among tourists than the West. It is characterized by plenty of lagoons, islets and long beaches with small villages. This part is the windiest of all in Mauritius all through the year. It also has cheaper accommodation options and not much facility. One of the finest resort areas is Belle…
