Weather (Mauritius)

Mauritius has a tropical climate and perfect for visiting all through the year. The average annual temperature of Mauritius is around 25 ˚C. This makes it a perfect beach destination irrespective of the month of travel. The only concern regarding the weather of Mauritius are the rains which are sufficient even in the dry season. There is practically no dry season in Mauritius per say. It can get quite windy in Mauritius more so in the East coast than the West. The winds can get as strong as 25 kmph at the start of summer.

Seasons

Mauritius has 2 seasons only- summer and winter. Since it lies in the Southern Hemisphere and India is in the Northern Hemisphere of the Earth, the season in Mauritius is opposite of the season of India at a particular time. Also the weather varies only slightly than in India. The table under gives us an idea of the weather during the two seasons:

SummerWinter
MonthsNovember – AprilMay – October
Max Temp (Avg)28 ˚C25 ˚C
Min Temp (Avg)21 ˚C16 ˚C
RainfallVery highLow
ConditionWet and humidCool and dry

Summer

Mauritius experiences summer season during October to April. Summers of Mauritius are not very hot. The days as well as the nights are warm. Albeit, it rains heavily during these months with January being the wettest month of Mauritius. Summer coincides with the cyclone season, major cyclones are relatively rare, and the rain showers usually provide a refreshing break from the heat, often occurring in the late afternoon or evening. One may travel during these months also to experience the island in full bloom and waterfalls gushing with water.

Winter

Winters of Mauritius start from end of May and last till October beginning. This season is characterized by pleasantly cool weather and very little rainfall making it ideal for travelling. The days are pleasant and the night may feel colder. The highest temperature is 26 ˚C in May. September is the driest month of the year in Mauritius. The south easterly winds make the weather cooler. There are chances of anti-cyclones during these months which may hamper sea ventures but they are rare. The cooler weather makes hiking and trekking experiences bearable.

Best Time to Visit

Mauritius is a perfect travel destination all through the year as you can infer from above. There is no lean season here. However, in our opinion, the winter months of Mauritius specially June to September are the most suitable months to visit Mauritius. August is the best month. The weather of Mauritius at this time is just about perfect for any activity including hiking, parasailing, sun bathing and swimming. The nights are also comfortably cool. One can enjoy all trips to the most. For more tips on trip to Mauritius, please check our suggestions page
