Transportation (Thailand)
Transportation in Thailand is no worry at all. Intercity travel is very convenient. Once you reach Bangkok, head to the bus terminal if you want to go to any other city. You will find many comfortable and luxury private as well as government buses operating from Bangkok to almost everywhere in Thailand. The prices vary for different categories. You may select the one that suits you the best. You may also book taxi from the airport if you want to have a private and more comfortable journey. Although the buses are comfortable too.
Intercity Bus
Every city has a well operated bus terminal for intercity travels. The buses are comfortable, reclining with much leg space for both short journey or a long overnight journey, too. You may comfortably rely on them. Overnight buses provide water bottle, snacks(biscuit) and dinner which are included in the ticket price. The bus would stop at a place late into the evening, approximately by 11:00 PM, for the dinner. This was a peculiar and fascinating experience for us which we appreciated. There is a food court sort of a place with a maze of stalls selling different kinds of food items. For a ticket holder there are dedicated stalls where you may show the ticket and buy food of your liking from the options available.
A word of caution that the language on the stalls is Thai and if you are not able to comprehend take help of the bus attendant or follow your fellow passengers. It is a buffet dinner where you get to chose 2 items with rice. If you do not want to exercise your free option, you may pay and buy something else from the other paid stalls. There are snacks vendors also so you have plenty of options. The food prices are very reasonable so you may opt for that because the food included in your ticket are all Thai traditional food items.
Intracity
For intracity commute in cities other than Bangkok, you have Songthaew or Tuk Tuk, a public transport for daily city commute. You may chose the best option to travel according to your likes and budget. If you want air conditioned private travelling then you have taxi available everywhere. You may also rent a motorbike for city tours provided you have a driving license and the weather permits. Most of the tour operators provide hotel pick up and drop facility so you would require a mode only if you are exploring on your own.
Transportation is no problem in Thailand. In case you are staying in Bangkok, let us warn you about its traffic. It is very busy and painfully slow. But, Bangkok’s public transport is exceptionally good and is your life savior. The network of MRT (Metro Rail) and BTS(Sky Trains, not the band) is convenient and can take you to almost all the major areas of the city. We definitely recommend this over taxi to save cost. Bangkok’s taxis are notoriously infamous for overcharging. So, know the fares and bargain before you hire one. More such tips are available in our suggestions post.
